A portion of Sigman Road, from Milstead Avenue to Old Covington Highway, will be named in memory of Brian Mahaffey, the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office Deputy and Investigator who was killed in the line of duty in 2010.

On Thursday, Dec. 27, the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office along with County Commissioners, the Mahaffey family and community members will unveil an honorary road sign erected on Sigman Road to honor Mahaffey.

Investigator Mahaffey was shot and killed in the line of duty while executing an arrest warrant along with fellow deputies on May 8, 2010.

The Board of Commissioners will ratify a resolution that reads in part, “…the portion of Sigman Road located within the unincorporated area of Rockdale County, Georgia beginning at the intersection of Sigman Road and Old Covington Highway and continuing to the intersection of Sigman Road and Milstead Avenue, is hereby designated in honor of Investigator Brian Mahaffey.”

“This will be a reminder to everyone who travels Sigman Road of the ultimate sacrifice Brian gave for his community,” said Sheriff Jeff Wigington.

The Sheriff’s Office thanked Commissioner JaNice Van Ness for bringing this resolution to the Board of Commissioners for approval, and Steven Holmes with Protection Services, Inc. for donating the signs.

"I was pleased to be involved with it," said Holmes.

Van Ness said the signs had been in the works since summer, but she had originally hoped to have the signs approved by Christmas to give comfort to the Mahaffey family.

Ultimately, there will be six signs donated for posting along the road with two presentation models for the family.

A small ceremony will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. on Sigman Road near the intersection of Sigman Road and Chambers Drive for the unveiling of the sign.

Within the next few weeks, additional signs will be erected along the designated corridor on the north and southbound sides of Sigman Road.
