UPDATE: Investigators determined the fire that killed a 40-year-old Conyers woman was accidental in nature and started in the kitchen area. The home reportedly had a working smoke detector.

--------------------------------

(May 23, 6:49 p.m.) A 40-year-od Conyers woman died Thursday when her house caught fire.

Investigators with Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens' office and the Rockdale County Fire Department are investigating the cause of a house fire that killed a Conyers woman Thursday afternoon. The victim has been identified as Dana Smith, 40, of Conyers.

"The fire call came in around 3:30 p.m. to a home located at 1086 West Adrian Circle," Rockdale County Fire Chief Dan Morgan said. "The fire resulted in a total loss to the structure."

A neighbor called 911 about the fire in the house.

When firefighters arrived, they found thick, heavy smoke inside, low visibility, and a lot of heat, said Morgan. They were notified there might be someone inside. The first crew that arrived worked on attacking the fire and bringing the heat under control while a second crew went in to search.

Firefighters found the victim in the bedroom, on furniture. They brought her outside and emergency medical personnel performed CPR. She was transported to Rockdale Medical Center but was pronounced dead.

Smith and her husband had lived at the house for the last two decades. Her husband was at work when the fire broke out. The two did not have children living at the home.

A dog was also found deceased in the home.

Investigators have not determined the exact cause of the fire and whether or not there was a working smoke detector but will continue the investigation throughout the evening.
