MMS gives to veterans

On Thursday, Memorial Middle School's Beta Club and Program Challenge students, under the guidance of Carolyn Snell, collected more than 50 gift bags for the Conyers Veterans of Foreign Wars post to hand out to retired veterans in the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville.

New Rotary member

Rochelle Smalls (left), a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America Atlanta Area Council, was inducted into the Rockdale Rotary Club on Dec. 12, by former Rotary club president Gary Moore. Smalls is a 2007 graduate of Heritage High School.

Finding Santa

Darlene Mitchell was this week's winner of the Great Santa Hunt for finding our missing Santa at the playground next to the East View Cemetery in Conyers. In 1972, the average cost of a gallon of gas was 55 cents. The Volkswagen Beetle became the most popular car ever. Watergate began to unfurl. Stevie Wonder was on the radio and "The Godfather" hit the silver screen. And Rockdale County High School's Class of 1972 graduated and went on to make their mark in the world.

CRA Toy Run raises $8K

Conyers Riding Association's 22nd annual Christmas Toy Run on Dec. 1 saw about 300 riders and raised about $8,000 for Rockdale Emergency Relief, which operates a local food pantry and rent/utility relief program.

4-H members shine

Rockdale County 4-H members recently won top spots in the Cotton Boll and Consumer Judging Competition. These 4-Her's worked hard for weeks preparing for this competition. They perfected their consumer skills by learning about fast food meals, watches, movie rentals and blue jeans. Sheriff’s Citizen Academy Graduates

Twelve Rockdale residents participated in the second 2012 Citizens Sheriff's Academy, an eight-week course designed to educate the public about the different function of the sheriff's department. Graduating this months were: Bradley Anderson, Kimberly Cooper, Pamela Cope, Jean Gourdet, Kathy Hooks, Gloria Jordon, Hilda Mansicalco, John Miesel, Mike Preffer, Mary Strickland, Isaac Watkins Jr. and Janet Williams.

Puppies receive donation

Pound Puppies 'N Kittens, Inc., an animal rescue group helping shelters in Newton, Rockdale and Walton counties, recently received a donation of $3,337 from Southern Bicycle League, representing a portion of proceeds from SBL's Covington Century Ride held on Aug. 4 with a record-setting number of participants. Shoal Creek Elementary recently held an Empty Bowls dinner fundraiser as a school wide service project involving students, clubs, staff and partners in education.
