The Rockdale County Public Schools Board of Election is looking at raising the millage rate to 22.99 mills from 21 mills on the school portion of the property tax.

This would be the first time since 2006 the rate has been raised. In 2006, it was raised from 20.44 to 21 mills.

Although the rate would be raised, the amount of taxes collected is projected to be less than last year, because of a shrinking tax digest.

Last year, about $58.7 million was collected with a 21 mill rate. This year, with a 22.99 mill rate, the Tax Commissioner's office projected about $58.19 million would be collected.

The meeting to vote on the millage rate will be held today, 7 p.m. at the board room of 954 N. Main Street.
