Registration now open for Kindergarten in 2010
Rockdale County Public Schools are registering eligible students for kindergarten from now until March 31 for the 2010-2011 school year. Pre-K enrollment will begin April 19 to April 30.

The public got a peek at $75 million of proposed projects for the next round of a proposed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which will go to the ballot July 20, the lion’s share of which would go to transportation.




RCSO K9 dies after years of service
Rockdale County Sheriff's Office's K-9 recently passed away after years of service. Jarno, a Belgian Malinois, died at the age of 11 on Feb. 24. Jarno came to the Sheriff's Office in February, 2007.




Lines installed to Fair Oaks
Rockdale Water Resources is moving along with installing water lines to the Fair Oaks subdivision and considering purchasing the well water system that currently provides water to the subdivision. RWR Director Dwight Wicks said Georgia Water Management Inc., which owns the well water system and has about 30 customers all in the Fair Oaks neighborhood, located off Ebenezer Road, had submitted a proposal for RWR to buy the entire system.




Food Lion to open this summer in Rockdale
The grocery store chain Food Lion is opening up a new location in Rockdale County on Ga. Highway 20, by sometime this summer, according to a company spokesperson. The new store will be approximately 42,500 square feet and will employ about 60 people.




Homeowners seminars offered by R.O.C.
The R.O.C. initiative (Revitalization of Communities) is offering free seminars this week to families and people interested in becoming a homeowner through the Rockdale County NSP. Potential homebuyers will have a one-stop-shop to determine program eligibility. Free tax preparation for low-income families
IRS certified volunteer tax preparers will be at the Rockdale County Parker Road Government Complex from April 2-9 to help low income families with filing income tax returns. The volunteers will be at 1400 Parker Road to help qualified families and individuals who make less that $58,000 per year with the filing of their taxes online free of charge.

On the set: Center Street and parts of Commercial Street were blocked off Thursday and Friday for the filming of a TBS microseries called "Gillian and Georgia," which consists of 10 two-minute episodes. Local businesses offer Hope for Haiti
In the coming weeks of March, several local restaurants will be participating in an effort to aid the Haiti earthquake victims, in a fundraising event called "Hope for Haiti." Among the restaurants participating are Chili's, Applebee's, Shane's Rib Shack, O'Charley's, and Café Milano. A percentage of all sales on the dates the restaurants will be fundraising during will go towards the cause.

Conyers Middle School Steps Up for Black History Month
Conyers Middle School Students sang, danced and recited great speeches for the 2010 Black History Program on Feb. 24. Performances included a step show - in the tradition of historically black fraternities and sororities - from the CMS Step Team, songs by the CMS Chorus, recitations of the poems "Ego Trippin" by Nikki Giovanni and "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou and portrayals of historic black American figures.
