RCPS Supt. King named as finalist for Supt. of the Year
The Georgia Schools Superintendent Association announced the four finalists for 2011 Superintendent of the Year, including Rockdale County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Samuel King. This is King's third time as a finalist for the award. The winner will be named in December.

BOC Notebook: Holiday furloughs, 1 mill tax rate increase approved
The County Board of Commissioners passed a three-day holiday furlough and a tax rate increase from 14.53 to 15.53 mills to help close a budget gap of more than $4 million in the $55.5 million budget. The furloughs were approved unanimously by the board at the Aug. 24 BOC meeting. The 1 mill tax rate increase was passed with a vote of 2-1 with Commissioner JaNice Van Ness dissenting.




RCSO: Home invasion not believed to be random
One suspect is under arrest and another identified in the home invasion and resulting shooting that sent two to the hospital on Wednesday. The incident was not believed to be a random crime, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.




Republican member on Board of Election resigns, replaced
One of the two remaining members of the three-person Board of Elections in Rockdale County resigned earlier this week and was replaced, according to an announcement by the Rockdale Republican Party.

Two charged with child cruelty, murder in baby's death
A Rockdale County couple was arrested on Thursday and charged with the death of a 5-month old infant. Matea Chavez Mendez Stewart, 21, and her husband William Grant Stewart, 21, face charges of murder and cruelty to children in the death of Mrs. Stewart's child.
