Heritage/Salem earn All-region honors

Another year in the books for Region 8-AAAAA and now it's time to honor some of the best players to grace the floor this season, as well as the coaches. Heritage players Isaiah Banks, Rashad Jones and Asia Caldwell headline the teams, along with Heritage boys' head coach Vernon Denmark. Standouts Ayanna Mitchell, Shay Tarver and Austin Samuel represent Salem on the list.

Second-half surge leads HHS to win

The Patriots didn't play like a No. 2 seed in the first half against Riverwood. Heritage was down 24-15 at halftime, but was a completely different team in the second half and ran off to a 53-48 victory over Riverwood.

Patriots sneak past Apalachee

It came down to Heritage's defense and the virtually unguardable Kamar Baldwin (27.2 points per game) and Heritage's defense won. Up three (65-62) with less than 30 seconds to play, Baldwin brought the ball up the court got past one defender, but was met by another and took a contested three that clanked off the back of the rim and was rebounded by the Patriots. Heritage sealed the deal with a 66-62 victory over Apalachee to put them in the region championship against Cedar Shoals tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Salem.

HHS athlete of the week: Isaiah Banks

Isaiah Banks scored 14 points, helping to lift Heritage to a 55-46 win over Lanier to advance the Patriots to the semifinals of the region tournament.

Heritage's defense has been its staple all season, and that didn't change in the team's opening region tournament game against the Lanier Longhorns as the Patriots beat Lanier 55-46.

10 HHS athletes sign on Signing Day

Signing Day is usually reserved for football players transitioning from high school to college, but Heritage held a signing day for all of its 2015 signees. 10 athletes signed on to attend college.

Keeping it 1,000: The Rashad Jones experience

Career marks such as scoring 1,000 points in your career as a high school basketball player don't come often. That many points is an almost-astronomical total for a high school player, and Heritage senior Rashad Jones surpassed 1,000 last Friday scoring nine points in a 66-51 victory over region opponent, Loganville.

HHS athlete of the week: Asia Caldwell

HHS athlete of the week: Asia Caldwell

Asia Caldwell, currently averaging 14 points per game, played lights out this week. On Tuesday she led Heritage to a much needed region win over Salem, scoring 15 points and leading her team in scoring. Caldwell also scored 10 points in a close 36-33 loss against Newton, according to maxpreps.com.

Coming into tonight's matchup the Heritage girls had only two wins this season. Despite their record the Lady Patriots have been playing better as of late, pushing Newton to the brink in a three-point loss Saturday.'

Q&A: Vernon Denmark

Heritage boys basketball is in good hands with head coach Vernon Denmark. The Patriots are currently 9-6 (4-2 region 8-AAAAA) and tied for third place in the region. The only two losses come by a combined five points to Gainesville, first in the region and Apalachee, also tied for third place. Heritage has won five of its last seven games, including wins over Tucker and Tri-Cities, two very good teams. Denmark speaks on his team's latest success and more in this exclusive Q&A.
