Children's Literature festival Sept. 28

Unlike 112 years ago, when the Conyers Civic League was founded, the written word has fierce competition winning the hearts and attention spans of today's kiddos. With a unique roster of inter-active author presentations, the League aims to engage youth with a book's possibilities during The Irene Irwin Children's Literary Day on Sunday, Sept. 28, 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. at the Olde Town Pavilion. The day will also serve as tribute to Irene Irwin, a former teacher and CCL member whose generous legacy continues to fund League endeavors today.

Smashing time at KCAF Tennis Tournament breast cancer fundraiser

The Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation's ninth annual Tennis Tournament, hosted Aug. 22-24 at the Snellville Summit Chase Country Club in Snellville, was a smashing success. About 67 teams registered and $32,000 was raised to help provide breast cancer screenings and awareness.

Travis: More exhausting - a soccer player or soccer grandmother?

My younger Macon granddaughter spent the week with me. It was exhausting for both of us. She had to be across the road from Parkview High School at 8 a.m. each morning. My alarm went off at 6 a.m. and I woke my granddaughter 15 minutes later. The 15 minutes gave me time to get the paper, drink a cup of tea and read the headlines.

One Tank Trip: Bear Hollow Zoo

Bear Hollow Zoo in Athens, Georgia has something for everyone. A short drive from Newton and Rockdale counties, this zoo offers a wide variety of wild animals. Here you can find a owls, bears, an American bald eagle and a reptile house with a variety of snakes and alligators. Volunteers educated on each of the animals are on hand to answer questions and offer a hands-on visit with some of the wildlife. The Bear Hollow Zoo is free for all visitors.
