School-level Teachers of the Year announced

Rockdale County Public Schools announced 22 school-level Teachers of the Year who will compete for the title of Rockdale County 2014 Teacher of the Year. One teacher at each school was selected by their peers for the honor of being named his/her school's Teacher of the Year. All 22 Teachers of the Year are educators to whom others look for inspiration and direction.

Magnet seniors present research at Japanese competition

Carlan Ivey and Larry Jacobs, both seniors at Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology, were recently recognized for outstanding research presentations at the 2014 Japanese Super Science High School Student Fair. This is the first time that an American school has been invited to exhibit at the annual Japanese student science competition that brings together over 5,200 of the top student scientists across Japan. Rockdale Magnet School was the only school from the United States among the 23 international schools that presented.

A Conversation With: Blake Craft

Blake Craft is the new headmaster of the Eastminster School, a private college prep school for students K-12 on Lennox Road in Conyers. Craft has a long history in local education, including as the longtime principal at Shoal Creek Elementary School. He started teaching in Rockdale County Public Schools in 1984 at Flat Shoals Elementary, where he won Teacher of the Year honors, and moved to the new Salem High in 1991 as a teacher and coach. Superintendent performance bonus approved

At the end of the superintendent's second year on the job, the Rockdale County school board approved a 5 percent bonus, or $8,750, for Rockdale Superintendent Richard Autry in a split vote of 5-2 on Thursday, July 24.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC), along with event co-host, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, unveiled to an audience of industry executives, public officials and potential students, GPTC’s new Design and Media Production Technology (DMPT) and Recording Arts Technology (RART) programs and facility. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house, held at the DeKalb campus, provided guests the opportunity to meet students and learn first-hand of the cutting edge academic programs as they toured the Mac Lab and the television and production studio.

CRCA Drama Camp

There were plenty of giggles and hard work as students blossomed during the Conyers-Rockdale Council for the Arts’ 2014 Musical Drama Camp, July 7-18. Under the guidance of Theater Director Jay Domingo, theater director at Edwards Middle School, and Music Director Brittney Jaynes, students, third grade to college age participated in exercises and training in singing and dance. RCHS Drama Camp

More than 30 students found their inner star during Rockdale County High School Drama Department’s 2014 Drama Camp for kids ages 8-19.  Under the supervision of Director-Choreographer Joey Fargar, of Conyers Kids, and Music Director Cindy Hall, students trained in acting, singing and dancing. Suddeth named new RCHS principal

IN BRIEF: Mary Ann Suddeth, the director of the Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology since 2005, was unanimously approved as the next principal of Rockdale County High School. Dr. Debra Arnold, RMSST's assistant director since 2005, was unanimously promoted to head the Magnet school by the Rockdale County school board Thursday.
